Do I need a Visa to travel to China?

In general, the answer is Yes. As long as you occupy an ordinary passport, you need to apply for a visa before entering China. There are few cases in which you are exempt from having a visa to enter China, supported by China’s visa exemption policy stated below:

How to proceed for a China Visa application?

What is a Work (Z) Visa?

Employment visa or Z visa, is issued to foreigners who are going to China for a job offer for more than 6 months, as well as for his/her accompanying family members including: spouses, parents and children who are under 18 years old. A work visa issued by oversea Chinese consulates normally is single entry and only valid for stay duration of 30 days from the arrival date in China. If you wish to stay longer and need multiple entries for working in China, you need to apply a residence permit and obtain awork permit card within 30 days after entry.

What are the application conditions for foreigners to apply for a Chinese work visa (Z visa) in Shenzhen?

- Above 18 years old with a good health
- Have the necessary professional skills and corresponding work experience for their work
- No criminal record
- Holding a valid passport or other international travel document that can replace the passport
- The posts to be engaged in shall be those with special needs and suitable candidates are not available in China, and shall not violate the relevant regulations of China 

Classification of Work (Z) Visa

For foreign employees, the work permit isdivided into three categories according to corresponding classified management:

  • I. Category A (High-end Foreign Talents)
  • II. Category B (professional talents)
  • III. Category C (Other foreigners meeting the demand of the domestic labor market)


Category A includes foreign talents, subject of the “green channel” and “admissible absence for procedure” services, include scientists, science and technology leading talents, international entrepreneurs, special talents and other foreign high-end talents urgently needed in the economic and social development of China. The general six main categories are as below:

(A) Selected for the Domestic TalentsPrograms;
(B) Conforming to the internationalcriteria of professional achievement;
(C) Foreign talents fulfilling the marketdemand for government-encouraged posts;
(D) Innovative and entrepreneurial talents;
(E) Outstanding young talents;
(F) Graded 85 points or more in ScoreTable; 

The above six general categories mainly include:
1. Talents appointed for senior management or technical posts in central enterprises and their subsidiaries, the global or regional headquarters of the world top 500 enterprises, national high-tech enterprises;
2. Former senior managers, key R & D members of the headquarters, deputy general managers or above and R & D chief of the second-tier branches or regional headquarters of the world top 500 companies;
3. Foreign talents whose salary income is 6 times or higher than the local average annual income of the previous year. For Shenzhen, annual salary income should be around 540,000 RMB (monthly salary should be around 45,000 RBM) or higher, average salary will be adjusted around in July every year;
4. Senior managers or technical staff employed by domestic and foreign medium-sized businesses; board chirmen, legal representatives, general managers or chief technical specialists appointed by small-sized foreign-invested businesses in line with government-encouraged industries specified under “Foreign Invested Industries Guide Catalogue” and “Catalogue of Foreign Invested Competitive Industries in the Central and Western Regions”;
5. Graded 85 points or more in the score table.

This category mainly includes:
(A) Foreign professionals with a bachelor degree or above and 2 years and above related work experience;
(B) Skilled talents with qualificationcertificates and with annual salary income is 4 times or higher than the localaverage annual income of the previous year. For Shenzhen, monthly salary shouldbe more than 30,000RMB, average salary will be adjusted around in Jul every year;
(C) Professionals graded 60 points or more according to Score Table.

Category C includes:
1. Foreign employees in line with the relevant regulations concerning the employment of foreigners in China;
2. Foreigners engaged in some temporary or short-term (no longer than 90 days) posts;
3. Foreigners under the quota system management, including young foreigners coming to China for internship under intergovernmental agreements, foreign students in line with the relevant regulations, foreign graduates from overseas institutions of higher learning, foreigners engaged in long range fishing and other special fields.

What is the procedure to apply for a Chinese work visa?

In principle you can go to a Chinese embassy, consulate or other diplomatic mission in person for the application. You might be required to submit supporting documents on a case-by-case basis, including potential submission of medical form and criminal history check, which requires a notarization and authentication.
